Hey everyone, sorry if I wasn’t more clear with what we could do for this week (yesterday). There was no specific prompt, so feel free to just upload any shots of things you’ve been tinkering with over the week or how you feel in response to the feedback you got last week.

I’m working on something specific for you for next week taking the conversations we had last week and culling some of that info. I’m also grabbing a few artists for each person to look at and then use that to build some convo. So expect that to post in the next day or two in the next session area.

Sorry, Armon, for the late post:

I’ve been doing some demographic research after our conversation last week. I think some version of this project has to contain all the things I collect, and I think that makes most sense as an online version of things that probably most easily is some sort of web application based around maps of the area. I think I’d like to find a clean way to overlay some of the maps from the city mapping department with my map of the churches. That way people can hop around and also kind of quickly see the relationships between these places that are more implied in the photographs.

My original google map of all of the churches:

Chris – I really love this idea, and the context it gives to the photos

Writing of studio progress / what I worked on this week

I walked around some unfamiliar green and industrial spaces to me in London. I also went into the city.

l wanted to be in nature for wellbeing purposes, and find industrial buildings as I have a longstanding interest this type of architecture. I also wanted to find way to re-discovering my local surroundings from a different perspective. I looked for textures which I can use in layers, bringing a collage aspect to the video pieces.

I have used various apps to edit and layer the videos. At present I am focusing more on image manipulation rather than sound, but would like to look at this in due course. My preference originally was to work in monochrome, however in some pieces I have utilised a muted palette.

I would also like to investigate the use of pattern, texture, and abstraction in video (visual and auditory).

I really love the movement of the water in both of these, they are meditative and soothing. I think part of what I’m drawn to is the industrial setting of both of these…in the first I see just a faint reflection of what looks like a building in the water, while in the second the landscape is much more visible. The contrast between the natural and created, pure and run down is lovely.

Really interesting colors and textures in the collages above. Again I love the intersection of organic shapes and textures with the urban abstractions.

Apologies for my late submission…I’ve been sick this week, so running a little behind on everything!
This week I have been working on two pieces. Each of these explore means of layering materials. I have been specifically thinking about using materials more intentionally.

l a y e r i n g  o f  p a i n t  | I shared this work-in-progress on our last call. This week I spent time excavating through the layers of thick latex paint to the softer dyed canvas underneath, using the shapes made by the paint as it blended together in choosing what to cut and peel away. I took some of the pieces I peeled away and reattached them to the painting, which created a repeat of shape that I found interesting. Words floating around in my mind: excavate, peel, flesh, layering, carve, figure, finding, cover, rediscover, searching

l a y e r i n g  o f  f i b e r  | In thinking through how best to communicate some of my ideas surrounding identity, I had the idea to try integrating some dyed canvas with woven fibers. We didn’t talk very long about craft and women’s work, but I can’t get it out of my mind, and I wanted to try applying some of those ideas to this work. Words floating around in my mind: craft, motherhood, story, rewriting, protection/shield, self-preservation, hide + reveal
