i had all intentions of completing my first round of performances by today, but heading back to work after a holiday has proven increasingly difficult. my new deadline for this project is friday morning @ 8a. sorry for the delay! i will post my documentations thereafter… and before our next meeting.

Hi Guys
Wanted to touch base with you all and say hi. I spoke to Natalia last week (I think it was last week!) and we agreed that from this point on I will observe. I hope to finish my project at some point in the near future and Natalia has very kindly said I can keep in touch with her. Sorry for bailing at this early stage but my head is not geared for this right now. Good luck with everything and I will be logging in and seeing what you are up to. Perhaps we can all have a zoom in a few months to see where projects have progressed/touch base 🙂

Hi Tash — it will be great to have you in the class on Saturday observing, and giving feedback.

At the top of Session 05, I will send you all a reinforcement of a couple of tools for giving and receiving feedback for artists who have work still in progress. I found this process to be helpful when we are still considering options and growth, and the “baby” (=project/ artwork) is still fragile.

Please review the top of Session 05 after today, and before Saturday!

I have put together this plan to mark past events but also as a sign of hope for change. It is to symbolically support the original protest, and also London Fields as a place where people are gathering in the last year for protest – Black Lives Matter, violence against women. However, I don’t want to be someone changing the narrative to one of simple positivity over a dark history. BTW I just joined the London Fields User Group to learn about the park’s organisation, see about staging future events there.

Very clear, seeing your path from what we discussed. Wishing the best for Saturday.

Please plan on having someone with you. It could be a bystander, just so you are safe, and have someone dedicated to interact with anyone that may oppose your actions (such as police), if needed.

The person may also document — or just watch. In an open space you can get many different types of reactions. It is always hard to predict.

Below: some information on Mierle Ukeles latest show during the pandemic.

Yesterday I was in a taxi going close to the airport, far away in Queens, New York.The driver went by the Queens Museum in the expressway.
That’s where her latest retrospective exhibition took place.

There is a big sign (in yellow with black letters) facing the expressway, greeting Service Workers and thanking them for the work during the pandemic!

It looks similar to the one in Times Square featured in the article, and in the subway (underground) system — except that it is horizontal and yellow. Watch the video below for inspiration when you have a chance!

As part of the Guide for Session 04 — and in preparation for Presentations on Session 05 — here are some examples of potential or actual “exploitation” that I mentioned that I would share, for discussion and reflection.

The examples are on artists working in various types of Social Engagement practices. And when it can cease to be (or never becomes) a real Collaboration.

The first example took place in London and can be especially important for Catherine’s project. The critique is from to point of view of a community centre organizer.

The second example is a project by Omer Fast in New York’s Chinatown in 2017. The first 3 links are the critique (in fact, protest) of the community. The fourth link is a review that gives an idea of the project itself, and the artist’s response to the critique.

The third example is of a series of works by the Brazilian artist Vik Muniz who lives in New York.

Vik created what he calls “masterpieces” out of garbage with communities who work with garbage. He sets up the photos with actual community members in them. He does contribute some money back to the community. I critique his approach.

Beyond the artworks, he did a documentary on this called “Waste Land”, where he is the main “actor” and script writer of the film, portraying himself as a collaborator with the community.

The film and the approach to the film is another layer to reflect upon, whether there is exploitation happening or not, whether it is made even worse.

I personally worked in a project at Duggal (high-scale large format photo print shop in Manhattan) at the same time that he was printing some of these original photos in very high end material and formats some larger than 5 meters high by 3 meters wide (15 ft x 9ft). Knowing the cost, knowing the places where he photographed this, the vulnerability of the communities, seeing the film, and knowing the market value of the works are some of the elements that frame my critique and considerations.

it has been a rough few weeks for me as far as finding time… so i apologize for not being as engaged as i would have liked. it also forced me to scale down my project for now… taking steps a bit more slowly (which is new for me — i tend to devour, and move on!) … so to be able to spend time building this project feels like it makes more sense — and is, i feel, the main point of this course. (thank you!)

i initially asked catherine to share some of her routines and/or rituals. she initially shares a few things… walks and pandemic hair-cutting. i re-enacted these as catherine. here is a link with my results that i will be presenting tomorrow.

this process has let me know that there is much i need to uncover in this process… i am looking forward being able to spend more time with it all and building a new facet of my practice.
