Hello! We have made a change and will have a group Zoom meeting this week for Friday at 11AM.
Please put your images into this file by Friday at 10AM. If you have any issue just email them to me in the order you want them in the file. melissastaiger@gmail.com
I look forward to what you post here and will make comments over the weekend. The focus is to see if you can continue or start a serial work. Reach out with any questions!
I think that Julie Mehretu did a great job talking about her work at the Tate Museum in this conversation:
I’ve been really enjoying my investigations which are very small scale, relate to rhythmn (spelling?) and are compulsive. I am doing them with one or pencils on my daily walks. The marks are made by the movement of my walk / perambulation, or a defined rhythm determined maybe by music or the sound of my feet. These are very small notebooks around 5x4inches.
here are some more. i’ve reduced the size to help upload
two more…
This week was a bit challenging creativity-wise, so the majority of this work was a chore unfortunately, but nevertheless made some progress. I had to remove myself for the most part from the two pieces/series I was planning to work on and focus on something else, so I finished a painting a friend of mine had asked for almost a year ago (also part of a series) – which is a bad pun painted over old paint by numbers that I have amassed quite a few of. The other piece is a rather small (5″x6″) grid painting on a photograph that I’ve also done multiple iterations of, working with a Berlin-based photographer, all about censoring/revealing/hiding. While both of these pieces were also a bit laborious, they provided some distraction from the other work.
I’m also attaching the progress on the embroidery piece, for which I committed to a color scheme, as well as the second daily color field painting. All of the source images for that one have been taken during isolation (May 1-20). The color scheme seems quite different from the first one. Feedback welcome!
PS – anyone else have issues uploading images on here? I tried to post repeatedly but got the “jpg invalid file type” error until I significantly reduced the size of the photos.
Emma – these look fascinating! As someone who enjoys compulsive work, I can really appreciate them. 😉 What’s the process like mechanically creating the sketches? They are reminiscent of your fan drawings, which I also find hypnotizing.
This week, I decided to put some of my washi papers to work and challenged myself to create collage versions of a couple of my watercolors. The first is an extension of a series I was working on last month. I included the original watercolor inspiration for reference. I also went back into the collaged papers with watercolor after, but the adhesive I used had some unintentional (and in places, unwanted) reactions with the paint. Making these was both fun and frustrating– thinking I’ll be back to just watercolors for next time!
Having some problems uploading images. Saw the same message you got, Vlado. But now it won’t even attempt an upload…not sure what’s going on but I put the images in Melissa’s Slides presentation instead: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1YrpbiwOKkO45MzM5J_Hu-ipEruYnX2VWSmrWNtRH9CA/edit#slide=id.g783e401e01_0_0
Hi everyone, I’ve tried to add my images to the powerpoint, and hope that it has saved. Vlado I really love your colour sensitivity. You coudl lean towards the luxe and desirability of pantones but somehow you sidestep it with authenticity. Jessica your tissue work is really wonderful – collage? If it is not tissue I wonder if that might be worth trying …?
Good morning, I see that my upload from last night was a fail, so I will post them on the PP. I am using Kurt Schwitters as my inspiration for collage this week. I have been hoarding paper for years, and I am challenging myself to cut it up and not be intimidated by its preciousness. Simultaneously I am taking a collage to pochoir workshop but have yet to fully integrate this into the work. I have been using black paper as a substrate.
Doris these are great, especially the last two, I think the black background really makes them pop! Jessica I agree with Emma, the tissue works beautifully, I think it gives the work a lot more dimension, definitely keep working with/on it.
Hello Everyone! It has been so lovely to read about each of your weeks and what you have been working on and figuring out! Look forward to our Zoom call today at 11AM (NYC Time).
I just reached out to studioELL about uploading issues. John let me know this might be the problem:
01. the images are too large (must be smaller than 5mb)
02. the image file names are something wonky with spaces (avoid spaces when naming files)
03. or the system is having a minor hiccup
01-02 are easy fixes… 03. is a slightly tougher one… as this seems to happen from time to time … randomly
i would recommend they clear their cache and restart their browser. then try again.
