01. What are you currently watching/reading?
I am reading Frankisstein by Jeanette Winterson
02. How have you been staying active in the arts community during this time of lock-down?Yes – trying to. Am participating in the Festival of Alternative Art Education, taking place on July 25th – now the whole event is on-line. And my arts group altmfa (peer led alternative art education group).
03. What was the last art event you experienced in person? Pace Gallery – James Turrell
04. Have you done any digital studio visits or shared your practice in any other way recently? In April, I did this challenge 30 drawings / 30 days. With my art group Altmfa (self organised) we have had weekly crits as part of a “Lockdown Residency”, and I am involved in another art crit group (every 2 weeks), I did “shared work” sessions during May with another artist.
05. When you think of art practice what comes to mind immediately? My current art practice – dense / “all over the place” art making – more struggle than fun!
06. Please provide an image of yourself.
07. Please share an image of your workspace.I share a studio that I have not been to for months – so here is the table I am working on. I am lucky to have lots of space at home.

hey all,

01. Mostly British whodunnits but I did a rare binge watch the other week – Line of Duty, which resulted in some very late nights and frantic dreaming. I don’t typically watch more than an hour of tv a day and my only must see each week is Gardeners’ World. This past week my main reading has been Amazons, Abolitionists & Activists by Mikki Kendall & A. D’Amico and a pile of books about birds/birdwatching.
02. I’ve mostly just been connecting with local artist friends informally online, usually via Instagram or chatting about process on FaceTime. During lockdown I’ve attempted to be less online than I normally would.
03. That feels a very long time ago now… I think the last thing I went to in person was probably a visit to The Frist Art Museum, who are soon going to reopen and extend their current shows (they don’t have a permanent collection). I have membership and it’s one of my favorite spaces in Nashville & only a mile away so I usually visit each exhibit multiple times over without the pressure having to take them all in at once but also can spend a lot of time with works that really connect.
04. I did the studioELL Archives course at the end of April.
05. Isolation; inside/outside; focus/distraction.

01.What are you currently watching/reading? I have been listening to lots of podcasts, most recently an interview with Ta-Nehisi Coates on The Ezra Klein Show. He’s more hopeful than I am right now, with is good for me to hear. Also slowly working my way through Jenseits der Stille (Beyond Silence) for the dual purpose of reading a good book and practicing my german. 02. How have you been staying active in the arts community during lockdown? I am a participant in a project called #ArtFeltThanks. A local business person wanted to fund a project that would both support local artists and thank health care workers. The yard signs and banners feature different artists’ work collaged into an image of a health care worker wearing scrubs and a mask. 03. What was the last art event you experienced in person? Early March, the non-profit I work for part time hosted its annual “6x6x30″ show. Artists complete 30 6″x6” works in 30 days. Opening was on March 6 and the show closed to the general public on March 11. Short but sweet. 04. Have you done any digital studio visits or shared your practice in any other way recently? Nope. Looking forward to this class to help shake me out of that! 05. When you think of art practice what comes to mind immediately? Something like a meditation practice or other discipline. Trying to form regular working habits even when I’m not feeling particularly creative or inspired. One benefit of this is when I am inspired I’m in a good position to take full advantage.

01. What are you currently watching/reading?
Reading – The Body Keeps the Score
Watching – Insecure

02. How have you been staying active in the arts community during this time of lock-down?
On Thursday nights I have a video drawing session with three artist friends. Also, I’m finalist for a public art project through Urban Arts Commission here in Memphis and I’ve been working closely with them on that. Last week I presented my proposal via zoom. I was also invited to do a drawing collaboration with four other Memphis artists where for three nights we look into a piece of obsidian that is shaped like a cell phone, light a candle, and all make drawings at the same time with white drawing materials on black paper. It’s been a whole of fun.

03. What was the last art event you experienced in person?
A show at David Lusk Gallery of local Memphis artist Tad Laurentzen Wright

04. Have you done any digital studio visits or shared your practice in any other way recently?
Besides the drawing I mentioned above, I did a virtual studio visit a Jodi Hays who taught the Archive class here at studioEll. I occasionally post my work on Instagram. I recently I had this interview published in a regional arts quarterly from a conversation I had with a current undergrad at University of Memphis. Reading it feels like looking into a parallel universe, back when people would meet up and sit across a table and chat. (I’m have to do elderly parental care so I’m still not meeting face to face with people.) Here’s a link to that interview: http://www.numberinc.org/melissa-dunn-holding-space/?fbclid=IwAR0wl2_KUUYg1KUBICWrYkuf9w-4CdQTuiCSN3ja4a3tBjRUyQDKUZDUfWU

05. When you think of art practice what comes to mind immediately?
Rich but ethereal, transitioning, shedding skin, entering a new phase
