  1. INTRODUCTION – 10th July 2024

What are you currently reading?I usually read few books at once, but currently on my kindle I am reading DAYBOOK the Journal of an artist by Anne Truit, and as a hardback I am reading the biography of Leonard Cohen by Sylvie Simmons. The first book is interesting to see the progression of the career of a female artist, who also had to bring up children, and how her work was sometimes affected, and yet by being very focused and engaged she managed to make a name for herself. I don’t like very much her style of writing (compared to the autobiography of Celia Paul which I loved), but I keep on reading as I am curious.
The other book about Leonard Cohen is very interesting, as I understand and connect very much with his mood as an artist, and it is very well written.

What are you currently watching?I have been watching in the last few days on YouTube a two part documentary on the life of Antonin Artaud, and also a documentary about Francis Bacon (which gave me a lot of inspiration).

What is a meal you made recently? Can you share a recipe?Yesterday I cooked Pak Choi and Courgette with sundried tomatoes and garlic.
Recipe: Wash and chop 2 Pak Choi and dice one courgette. Heat up in a wok a little sunflower oil mixed with dark roasted sesame oil. Add the courgette first, stir and add one large clove of chopped garlic. Keep on stiring, then add 5 large sundried tomatoes chopped finely. Finally add the chopped Pak Choi, a bit of salt (not too much as the sundried tomatoes may be already salty), pepper, and chopped coriander or parsley. Stir until all the vegetables are midly cooked (too much cooking will make them soggy), they need to remain a little crunchy.  Serve with quinoa or rice, or boiled potatoes.

Whose studio or artwork have you seen recently that really excited you?I visit regularly many galleries and art shows and see some great work (some not so good!). There is an independent art school in London which is currently becoming quite popular, called ESOP and I have seen some interesting work that I related to, like the one of Harriett Wolfe, or Caroline Lovett.   (https://theessentialschoolofpainting.com/)
I also enjoyed the charcoal portraits by Frank Auerbach at Somerset House.

What have you seen recently (either art; performance; film, music; stage; publication; etc.) that had a significant impact on you and your work?A few months ago I went to a talk at the Marlborough gallery (sadly it closed few weems after this last show and talk). It was the work of Liorah Tchiprout, and she was interviewed by the well-known London art critic Hettie Judas. The show and talk was inspiring.
I went to the Royal Opera House to see Andrea Chenier by Giordano, where there is this beautiful song called ‘La Mamma morta’. It is one I often listened to in the past sang by Maria Callas, an artist that I listen to when I paint.

Please provide an image of yourself. Please share an image of your workspace.I’ve just moved to a new studio last week, and right now it is in a real mess so I have no photos to show of my work space. I may produce things for this course at my home and my studio depending what I work on.

    1. Hi Jon. Thanks for sharing your current interests and recipe. I love your studio, such a beautiful space!! I am going to catch up this afternoon with the rest of the assignment.. it’s very nice to reconnect with you,

  3. What are you currently reading?
A Manual for Cleaning Women by Lucia Berlin
These are short stories – funny and dark – and amazingly written.

    What are you currently watching?
The Outlaws – a funny, dark story (seem to like this mix) based in Bristol

What is a meal you made recently? Can you share a recipe?
Purple Leaf Kale Salad – made last night – Firstly collect seeds from last years’ kale plants, in the spring plant them in trays and transplant outdoors in early summer. Grow them despite all of the rain. Collect the leaves and pound in mortar and pestle with oil to make them soft. Add more leaves, beets and cheese of your choice.

Whose studio or artwork have you seen recently that really excited you?
We went to Lonnie Holley exhibition at Camden Arts Centre – an amazing exhibition and gallery space. Lonnie combines sculptures made from found materials (which I loved!) , while connecting with his community. He is based in southern States and just did an artist residency here in Suffolk. The film about him in the gallery really explains him, his music and his art activities. https://camdenartcentre.org/whats-on/lonnie-holley
