LESSON 04 / LAYER, DISTORT, REPEAT
GOALS /
__ make 9 drawings that synthesize the ideas from our first 3 sessions using layering, collage, and repetition
__ experiment with distortion, drawing over earlier pages
__ learn more ways other artists have used sketchbooks
__ share work in zoom meetup
__ consider how you will continue to use your sketchbook in the future
ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION /
now that we’ve a few pages with lines and marks, as well as taken time with noticing how we see the world, it’s time revisit some of these sketchbook pages to add some layers
go back to 3 sketchbook pages and add at least one new layer in a different medium. this will help emphasize that the sketchbook pages are not precious, but a place to experiment
go back to 3 more pages and collage in anything you want: fabric, tear pages from magazines, art you want to tear up, or print out pictures of texture you take
now make 3 new drawings or collages loosely inspired by some elements within the layers and collages. consider using expansion, contraction and distortion as you find the magic in iteration and repetition.
BRING TO ZOOM MEETUP

INSPO FOR SESSION 04
Ellen Gallagher on ‘Play’
The drawings you shared the week were great: experimental, expressive, evolving, but most importantly, I could tell you were having fun.
I try to use my time with sketchbook not as a chore but a time to let go. I put on some music, a podcast, or an audio book and before I know it an hour has passed.
Flipping through my sketchbook and looking at the pages is also an important part of this ritual because I feel like each page is communicating with me “add some more layers” or “I’m good, keep flipping”.
I actually flip through my books as much as I draw in them. As a matter of fact, at a show of paintings I had earlier this year, I asked my friend to help me make a film that was projected on a big wall on a loop of me flipping through my sketchbook. I feel like it captures the sense of communication that can happen with a sketchbook. You can watch it here:

So this week as you add layers with different mediums and collage, remember to approach it with a sense play. There’s no right or wrong. This is pure freedom. Some pages you may not “like” but consider them necessary steps to get the drawings that totally blow your mind.
Here are some words and phrases that came up last night:

Here’s a fantastic video of the artist Tschabalala Self that was in last night’s slide show. She talks about how shapes tell a story and since you’ll be cutting out shapes this week I thought it’d be inspiring. The entire youtube series The Art Assignment is wonderful!
here is my work from class …
i started with the line drawing and layered in with the paper and masking tape collage. i didn’t have a glue stick… but decided to use the masking tape as another collage element.
here are the rework pieces… a mix from week 02 and 03… all reworked with an added medium. continued to play with masking tape… but also cutting and erasing.
here are my new collages…
Nice 🙂
I like how you improvised with the masking tape!
and finally, my new pieces focused on repetition. played with graphite rubbing from the tape… then cutting and re-collaging.
sorry to miss today too!! here is a short video.

As you can see, I did collages. I was traveling over the weekend and went to a thrift store where I found these cool vintage 45 record sleeves. they just spoke to me and I bought them. They possess built-in art so I didn’t need to do much. I like spreading it across the page and the rose was a last minute decision.
I did do some sketches, one of a rabbit, one of the flower you see in the last collage. I reused my crazy bird by printing out with a little Kodak pocket printer and gave him a home in the flowers. I also used a weird distorted pic of my eye that I also pocket printed. The rabbit sketch was printed as well. I was inspired by Jody’s collage using fresh leaves and made a fresh collage of my own.
